Day 3: Sunday, March 02 - Tlaxcala
/ San Miguel del Milagro / Our Lady of Ocotlán / Mexico City
Leave
Puebla today and travel to the state of Tlaxcala (smallest in the
country) to visit two famous churches with dramatic stories of faith.
First we stop at San Miguel del Milagro (St. Michael of the Miracle) where
tradition tells us that St. Michael the Archangel appeared three times to
a local peasant to have him announce a source of water with miraculous
healing powers for all the faithful. Later we stop by an amazing example
of barroque and
churrigueresque
architecture, Our Lady of Ocotlán. Inside this church we can observe the
image of Our Lady miraculously carved inside a tree in the year 1541 after
tan apparition of Our Lady. After this visit depart for Mexico City. If
weather cooperates, we should be able to enjoy majestic views of Mexico’s
1st, 2nd, and 3rd highest peaks
(including the legendary volcanoes of Popocatepetl and Itzaccihuatl). This
evening, share your stories with your fellow pilgrims at hotel’s roof
lounge, admiring the city’s sunset (orientation meeting). Then join the
group for dinner at one of the hotel’s restaurants. (B, D)
Day 4: Monday, March 03 - Plaza de las 3 Culturas /
Pyramids of Teotihuacán / Guadalupe
Enjoy a
delicious breakfast and prepare for a memorable travel day. On your way
out of town, stop at the ‘Plaza de las Tres Culturas’ (3 Cultures
Square). Filled with Pre and Post Columbian history, this square
represents the cultures of México. Taking the longest avenue in Mexico,
‘Avenida de los Insurgentes’ (Insurgents Avenue), depart the Federal
District (equivalent to our District of Columbia) to the State of México
to visit the amazing complex of pyramids and temples that make the
mysterious City of Teotihuacán, one of the best preserved pre-Columbian
cities in the Americas. Teotihuacán was the most important city in North
America around 500 AD, with a population of approximately 200,000
inhabitants. This visit gives us a better idea of the culture and
indigenous customs of St. Juan Diego’s ancestors. Also witness the
different and very important ancient uses of the Maguey plant (from the
Cactus family) and its relationship to the ‘ayate’ of St. Juan Diego.
After our visit to Teotihuacán, we stop at a ‘posada’ for a delicious
lunch buffet. After a restful lunch, we travel to the most sacred
Sanctuary in all of México, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Until
now our pilgrimage has been an
introduction in order to better understand the cultural background that
led to the construction of this impressive complex where the Virgin Mary
appeared to the humble Native American Juan Diego (now St. Juan Diego).
An event that inspired the conversion of millions of Native Americans of
that time. We proceed to visit the New Basilica where the original
‘ayate’ of St. Juan Diego can be found with the sacred image of Our Lady
of Guadalupe. You will have plenty of time to re-visit this most famous
and divine work of art. A video introduction of the Guadalupe story has
been prepared for us at one of the Guadalupe gift shops. Our group
departs the gift shop with a flower arrangement for Our Lady. The flower
arrangement is taken to one of the chapels in the New Basilica and placed
at the foot of the Altar. Holy Mass is celebrated in this chapel. Later,
we will visit the Old Basilica where our Lord is perpetually exposed in
the Blessed Sacrament. After we make our visit to the Blessed Sacrament,
we will visit other places of historic and religious importance in the
Guadalupe complex. We end today’s unforgettable pilgrimage with one more
visit to the image of Our Lady. Remainder of the evening at leisure.
(Tonight Juan shows several restaurant options within 3 blocks from the
hotel). (B, L)
Day 5: Tuesday, March 04 – Holy Family (Blessed
Miguel Pro) / Zócalo / Metropolitan Cathedral / Royal Palace /
Anthropology Museum / Buena Vista Market:
This morning,
join Fr. Martin, Juan and Guillermo on a short walk from our Hotel to the
Church of the Holy Family. This Church contains the remains of Blessed
Padre Miguel Pro, the famous martyr Priest of Mexico whose death was
documented in pictures. Holy Mass is celebrated here. Afterwards, begin a
cultural day in México City. Enjoy a panoramic tour of this legendary
city, renowned as the world’s largest city. Tour includes the Zócalo, the
second largest square in the world. It is located in the center of the
old and once powerful Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlán, where ruins of its
major temples can still be admired. Visit the monumental Cathedral
Metropolitana, built with stones of the old Aztec temples. This massive
Church rivals those of Europe. Visit the “Palacio Nacional” (National
Palace), where in addition to being Mexico’s Presidential Offices, we can
also find the famous murals of Diego de Rivera portraying the history of
Mexico. Then travel to the Forest of
Chapultepec for a fascinating tour of the impressive Museum of
Anthropology, world famous and renowned as the principal source of
information about the archeological and cultural composition of México and
America. As one of the world’s largest of its kind, the museum presents
an impressive permanent collection of artifacts and exhibitions that
demonstrate the daily life of México’s indigenous people. A shopping stop
follows at the Mercado Buena Vista with a great variety of original
Mexican handicrafts. Afterwards return to the hotel for a leisure
evening. (B, L)
Day 6: Wednesday, March 05 - Basilica of Guadalupe
& Site of St. Juan Diego’s Home (Our Lady’s 5th Apparition) / (optional) -
Wednesday, March 5th,
2008 - Basilica of Guadalupe & Site of St. Juan Diego’s Home (Our Lady’s 5th
Apparition) / (optional) - Mexico's Folkloric Ballet. After the breakfast
buffet, return today for a full day visit to Guadalupe. Complete the tour
of the Guadalupe complex with a guided visit to the remaining Chapels,
gardens and places of importance. Climb the “Cerrito de Tepeyac” (Tepeyac
Hill) in a Rosary procession until we reach the “Capilla del Cerrito”
(Chapel of the Little Hill) that commemorates the place of the first
apparition. Holy Mass is celebrated here. After Mass, there will be time
for Confessions. The remainder of the day is free at the Guadalupe
complex for our personal devotion and prayers. Finally, (if time allows)
visit St. Juan Diego’s old home which is the site of the fifth apparition
of Our Lady. A church and a well with
spring
water now stand at the site where Our Lady appeared and cured Juan Diego’s
uncle. Upon our return to the Royal Hotel, join your fellow pilgrims for
the farewell dinner, in a spirit of thanksgiving for a fruitful pilgrimage
and our new found friendships. After dinner, travel by motorcoach to the
historic and gorgeous ‘Palacio de Bellas Artes’ (Palace of Fine Arts) to
enjoy an unforgettable show (optional tour for an extra cost, but highly
recommended – see registration for more details). The Ballet Folklórico
de México de Amalia Hernández (Mexico’s Folkloric Ballet). This world
renowned show will help us understand more about the rich Mexican culture
and its people. (B, D)
Day 7: Thursday, March 06 - Return from México to
the U.S.A.
The last day
commences with our last breakfast as the luggage is being loaded onto the
motorcoach. Depart for Benito Juarez International Airport with plenty of
time for check in and extra security. As your flight takes off, take one
last look at a land filled with history and culture; a land that gained
the love and admiration of our late Holy Father; a land where our Lady
converted and continues to convert many, many people! (B)
“¡Adiós México! Te quiero mi Guadalupe.”
There is US Immigration
and US Customs upon arrival in the U.S.A. Welcome Home!
